Recent studies suggest that organic compounds may strongly influence aerosol nucleation from sulphuric acid and water vapour (Zhang et al. 2009; Metzger et al. 2010). Axel Metzger focuses on the detection of volatile organic compounds based on Proton-Transfer Reaction Mass Spectrometry (PTR-MS) and a recently developed Proton Transfer Reaction Time-of-Flight (PTR-TOF) instrument to determine the possible role of organic vapours on new particle formation and growth.
